Beetroot Juice Side Effects: What to Know Before You Drink
Is Beetroot Juice Safe?
For most healthy adults, beetroot juice is very safe at typical doses (up to 16 oz per day). The most common effects are cosmetic — not medical. Serious side effects are rare but worth knowing about if you have a specific condition or take certain medications.
Beeturia (Pink Urine or Red Stool)
This is the most common effect and it's completely harmless. About 10-14% of people have a genetic variation in betalain metabolism that causes the pigments to pass through unmetabolized. Your urine or stool may look pink or red for 24-48 hours. It's not blood.
Low Blood Pressure Risk
Beetroot juice lowers blood pressure — that's a benefit for most people, but a risk if you already have low BP or take antihypertensive medication. Effects can stack unpredictably. Talk to your doctor before adding daily beetroot juice if you're on BP meds.
Oxalates & Kidney Stones
Beets contain oxalates, which can contribute to calcium-oxalate kidney stones in susceptible people. If you have a history of kidney stones, limit beetroot juice to 4-8 oz per day and stay well hydrated. Most healthy adults with no stone history have no issue at standard doses.
Medication Interactions
Discuss beetroot juice with your doctor if you take: blood pressure medications, PDE5 inhibitors (like sildenafil), nitrates for angina, or blood thinners. The nitric oxide boost from beetroot juice can potentiate these medications.
How Much Is Too Much?
Research doses are 8-16 oz per day. Above that, side effects (loose stools, blood-pressure crashes, oxalate load) become more likely without adding benefit. One Pomona bottle (8.4 oz) per day is right in the sweet spot used by most clinical trials.
FAQ
- Can beetroot juice cause diarrhea? — In large amounts (over 16 oz at once), yes. Fructans in beets can cause loose stools in sensitive individuals. Stick to 8 oz per day and you're very unlikely to experience this.
- Is beeturia dangerous? — No. Beeturia is harmless and clears within 24-48 hours. If red urine persists longer than that after stopping beetroot juice, see a doctor to rule out other causes.
- Can beetroot juice hurt your kidneys? — Not directly for healthy adults. But if you have a history of calcium-oxalate kidney stones, moderate your intake to 4-8 oz per day and hydrate well.
- Can I drink beetroot juice if I'm on blood pressure medication? — Talk to your doctor first. Beetroot juice adds to the BP-lowering effect and could cause hypotension if not monitored.
- Is beetroot juice safe during pregnancy? — Generally yes in moderate amounts, but always consult your OB-GYN. Pomona Organic Beetroot Juice is pasteurization-stabilized and USDA Organic.
